Districts Attacking Teachers all Over the Country
From The Desert Sun editorial page, 1999
TEACHERS ABUSED
The Palm Springs Unified School District states that the lawsuit filed by Geraldine Johnson is "mean-spirited, frivolous, and without merit." What hypocrisy! PSUSD could write the book on mean-spiritedness, et.al.
Everything Ms. Johson alleges is exactly how PSUSD and other districts operate. The contracted positions go to the non-credentialed, foreign and out-of-state people while the people with California credentials are not even interviewed and often work in the district as substitute teachers.
To add insult to injury, even if by some miracle they do get a contracted position, they are on probabtion and at the mercy of the district and are almost always not re- elected and replaced by a non-credentialed cheaper person.
If anyone wonders why the schools have become synonymous with failure, lack of discipline and no standards of which to speak, look at how districts hire, support and retain teachers. They get an F for all three. The more educated you are, the greater the chances that you will never be hired.
Education if the only profession that lowers standards for hiring and brilliantly thinks they are getting the most qualified people. Parents: I beg, I implore! (I would sell my soul if it would get you to do this), Immediately go down to your child's school and ask why they think that people wihout California credential should be hired at all.
STACEY E. MC RAE
IndioFor years, districts all over the country have been blaming teachers for filing lawsuits, and with the power of their voices and tax monies to squelch any hope of justice being done, they have buried any hope of a teacher being heard. (See current Andrekus Case in Illinois.) NAPTA intends to change this picture by giving abused teachers a voice, FINALLY.
Also, note McRae's claims that our schools are synonmous with failure due to their practices concerning teachers. There is no coincidence that her words are echoed all over this nation.
